air bubbles in water
The transport of liquid droplets in gaseous atmosphere and flows of particle laden dispersions is of importance in a wide range of industrial processes. These include all types of spraying applications, i.e. atomization of liquid fluids like fossil fuels, paintings, agricultural crops and medical or pharmaceutical sprays: while research in meteorology and climate control is interested in fluid flows and its interaction with the particles motion, particles dispersed in liquids is a major issue for waste water treatment.

droplets and ligaments in air
Dispersions of solid particles are of interest in numerous applications such as surface coatings, ceramics and various chemical or biochemical processes. The increasing importance and sensitivity concerning environmental and medical impact particularly of particles generated by combustion processes and other industrial facilities requires precise control of particle sizes and distributions. The development in pharmaceutical industries aims at the medication of therapeutic formulations by means of fine liquid atomization.Compared to mechanical or electrical probes for measuring size distributions of small particles or droplets, optical diagnostics offer several advantages: superior spatial and temporal resolution combined with non-intruding sampling.

应用
  • liquid sprays (fuels, water, paint, pharmaceutical, crop)
  • spray break-up and atomization
  • powder, solid particles (alloys, ceramics)
  • emulsions and dispersions (waste water, meteorology, industrial facilities)
  • bubbles (heat exchangers, industrial processes)
  • spray drying processes (food, powders)
